Pentagon betting parlor dead too soon Editorial Mark Russell / The Los Angeles Times 01 August 2003 The Grand Rapids Press A13 I for one am sorry they decided to shut down the proposed betting parlor at the Pentagon. I was hoping to make a killing betting on a killing. Gambling on future terrorism and assassinations is a long shot. You might wager on Udai and Qusai getting whacked only to lose if you had them in a Trifecta with Yasser Arafat getting herpes. When I first heard of this crazy scheme, one word popped into my head -- Poindexter. The plan is attributed to Admiral John Poindexter who also gave us Iran-Contra Bingo and Information Awareness Spy on Your Neighbors Yahtzee. I confess that I thought the thing was a hoax. But I thought Iran- Contra was a hoax. I thought that silly enemy deck of cards was a hoax. Now I think John Poindexter was a hoax. Not everyone was against the Pentagon betting parlor. I understand Bill Bennett loved it.
