Real life will be like Matrix. 25 July 2002 Mirror 27 OUR lives could be a computer simulation just like in the hit movie The Matrix, a philosopher claimed yesterday. Nick Bostrom, of Yale University, argues it could be technically possible to mimic consciousness by the end of the century. Once we do that, then we will simulate universes to live in, he writes in the journal Mind. He says it could already have happened as in The Matrix where Keanu Reeves is trapped inside a computer generated world. But economist Robin Hanson, of George Mason University in Virginia, argues the programmer could determine the way we live. We need to avoid being deleted by working out what the simulation is for. If it is for entertainment then we need to be entertaining and funny.
